2022 BTSCC report

Bulk tank somatic cell counts (BTSCCs) from monitored Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMOs) are indicative of the quality of the nation’s milk supply and are important indicators of animal health. Improvements in U.S. dairy management practices are responsible for the overall decrease in BTSCCs and the corresponding improvement in milk quality since 2002. The Pasteurized Milk Ordinance sets BTSCC limits to ensure the quality of milk produced and sold for human consumption. BTSCC is an important indicator of mammary health and decreased somatic cell counts (SCC) are associated with decreased mastitis, increased cheese yield and increased shelf life compared to milk with high SCC.
