Presentation will focus on milking event insights and teat scoring
New Prague, MN (December 6, 2022) – National Mastitis Council’s (NMC) Jan. 5 webinar, led by Cornell University’s Paul Virkler, features “What Can You Learn From Teat Scoring On Your Dairy?” This free, one-hour educational offering starts at 2 p.m. Central time (USA/Canada).
Virkler explains that teat scoring can provide valuable insights into the milking event and environmental influences on teat skin. This webinar will focus on teat scoring and include a look at NMC’s resources that can help you interpret what you find. Also, the webinar will address open teat lesions and provide an update on NMC’s survey regarding this topic.
By attending this webinar, participants will understand how to:
- Perform teat scoring on dairy cows and gain the most insight from the information gathered
- Use available NMC resources and other publications to help interpret teat scoring findings
- Review open teat lesion data, including risk factors and prevention steps that can be taken
Virkler was born and raised on a dairy farm in Lewis County, N.Y. He attended Cornell University where he earned his bachelor’s and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, and then spent seven years as a cattle veterinarian with Attica Veterinary Associates in Western New York. Subsequently, he worked for DeLaval as a technical services veterinarian. Currently, Virkler is working as an extension veterinarian for Quality Milk Production Services/Cornell University where he provides science-based advice to dairy producers and their veterinarians as an integral part of their udder health and milk quality teams. He also teaches milk quality courses and is involved in ongoing applied research in the areas of udder health, milking equipment, mastitis, and milk quality.
